Will a metal roof match my home and the roofing style in my neighborhood?

Yes, the metal roofing that is produced can match a variety of different materials.  In fact, there is metal roofing that looks just like the traditional asphalt shingle, cedar shake, slay or slate roofing.  There are numerous options to match the look that you want for your home and neighborhood. 

Does a metal roof cost more?

Metal roofing's life expectancy is much longer than that of the typical asphalt shingle.  As a result, you can expect your new roof to cost more than an asphalt shingle roof.  It is comparable in price to tile roofing or cedar shake roofing but the life expectancy is much greater.  You can expect a metal roof to last a minimum of 2-3 times longer than an asphalt roof.  Metal roof will retain its appearance and durability for decades. 

No matter what style of metal roofing you choose, chances are you'll never have to worry about your metal roof again.  We're not saying that it will last forever, but we are saying it will last longer than you. 

Will it increase the value of my home?

 Can you walk on a steel roof?

Yes.  Some care must be used while walking on the roof, but during installation the roofers walk all over the shingles and there is no damage.  If you do need to get up on the roof for any reason, just take the same caution that you would any other time you have been on the roof.

Is steel roof noisy in the rain?

Metal roofing is quiet.  The combination of the insulation and the dead air space minimize the outside noise in your home.  Chances are you will hear more noise coming in through your windows and wall than you will your metal roof.

How wind and weather resistant is a steel roof?

Metal roofing has been proven to resist wind speeds in excess of 120 mph.  A metal roof can resist years of abuse from weather such as heavy snow, high winds, and hailstorms.  In locations that see high amounts of snow, metal roofing has been the chosen product among homeowners.  It sheds snow quickly preventing ice damming at the eves.  Ice damming can result in water backing up and collecting under the roof and then leaking into your house. 

Is steel roofing fire safe?

Steel roofing is classified as a noncombustible roofing material (Class A).  In new construction and in many re-roofing applications the metal roofing system is Class A noncombustible roof assembly.  In roof-over applications, where panels are installed over old combustible shakes or shingles, the resulting roof assembly can be classified as A, B, or C depending upon the type of underlayment installed between the old roof and new roof.

How long does it take to install a steel roof?

Usually only a few days.  The complexity of the building's roofscape is the primary factor determining the time required.  Complex roofs with hips, valleys, and penetrations generally require more time than basic designs.

 What does hail do to steel roofs?

Steel roof panels are as durable if not more durable than a traditional asphalt shingle.  Except under extreme storms, the panels show no visible effects from impacting hail stones.  Some insurance carriers extend discounts on premiums to homeowners with metal roofs.  Talk to your agent about the discount she extends toward metal roofs.

Are steel roofs more susceptible to lightning strikes?

Steel roofing is no more susceptible to lightning strikes than any other material.  It has been demonstrated that lightning strikes most frequently the highest points of terrain.  Where concern exists, lightning rods can be installed on roofs that are the highest point of surrounding terrain.

How much maintenance is required?

 A properly installed metal roofing system is virtually maintenance free over the life of the roof.  All you have to do is occasionally hose it down from the ground.  In the winter, the snow slides off, eliminating the need to shovel off the excess weight.
